“No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowel. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.” (Luke 11:33)
Jesus uses this simple everyday truth—that light is meant to illuminate, not to be hidden—to teach that God’s truth exists to guide a person’s life and bring brightness to those around them. The light received through faith is not something to keep locked inside but something that naturally shows itself in daily living, encouraging others and pointing the way forward.
“Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness.” (Luke 11:34)
Here, “the eye” symbolizes the orientation of the heart, one’s values, and the way one perceives the world. When the heart is sincere and healthy, it receives what is good, and the whole life becomes bright; but when the heart is clouded, it cannot receive truth, and the inner life becomes dark. Jesus emphasizes that it is not outward circumstances but the inner posture of the heart that determines whether one’s life is filled with light or darkness.
“See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.” (Luke 11:35)
Jesus warns that what a person believes to be right or good may, in fact, be a form of darkness that clouds the heart. Prejudice, selfishness, jealousy, and distorted senses of justice can feel like “light” to the person holding them, yet they actually darken the inner life. Jesus calls for continual self-examination to ensure that the light within is genuine and not a deceptive form of darkness.
“Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.” (Luke 11:36)
When the heart is open to God’s light, the entire person becomes bright – judgment, actions, and relationships all become healthy – and such a person naturally radiates light to others. When the inner life is filled with God’s light, one is no longer controlled by external circumstances; instead, life itself becomes illuminated, and the person becomes a source of hope for others. Jesus paints a powerful picture of the influence a person filled with true light can have.
